You just cannot imagine Pizza without some appetizing toppings. It would be like a world without colours and nachos without sauce.
Pizza toppings are one of the most crucial parts affecting the first impression due to taste combinations. No matter how good pizza you make , if you mess up the toppings quality or quantity wise , it would be like killing off most of your hard work.
Toppings for Vegetarian Pizza
1. Extra Parmesan Cheese with smoked salt and Black Olives.
2. Mushrooms with Pepper.
3. Chilli flakes or Crushed red chilli
4. Caramelized onions
Extra Parmesan Cheese with smoked salt and Black Olives.
This is one of the most common yet simple combination of toppings which fits very well on any type of Vegetarian Pizza.
You can even substitute the black Olives with Capers which add extra flavours into your Pizza sauce after you cook them. As far as the cheese is concerned , you can add any type of cheese which you like; for e.g. mozzarella cheese , I like to have my Veg-pizza with Parmesan cheese and Black olives with a small drizzle of olive oil on the side-crust to give it a bit more shine.
Best substitutes for parmesean cheese :
a.Mozzarella cheese
b.Gorgonzola
c.Cheddar cheese
Although all of the above cheese blend pretty well with any pizza , my personal favourite is maturated cheddar cheese in combination with some mozzarella.
Mozzarella is significantly less salty and even melts properly than cheddar cheese , therefore using cheddar with mozzarella often helps balance the salt from cheddar.
2. Extra mushrooms with pepper
There are literally million things you can do with theses combinations.
a. Roasted mushrooms
Roasting mushrooms for the right time limit makes them more compressed and gives a intense flavour of the mushroom in every bite with fresh sliced red and yellow bell pepper.
Note: Do not forget to chop those mushrooms , as it will help them to get caramelized and make them release all the flavour they have to your pizza.
3. Flakes or Crushed red chilli.
Red dried chilli flakes are one of the most common ingredients used in Mediterranean restraunt for adding spice and flavour in all kinds of sauces , pickles and mainly for pizza sauces in pizza parlours.
There is nothing wrong with using packaged crushed chilli flakes but using fresh pepper flakes gives your veg-pizza the extra richness and intense flavour which something you cannot expect from readymades.
Add some cheese to balance the extra spiciness if you are using homemade pepper flakes.
4. Caramelized onions
Got bored simple onion toppings , try out caramelized onions instead of regular ones.
Caramelizing the sugar in onions brings it a extra crust and a bitter-sweet flavour to the pizza. Top them on a simple cheese pizza and you are good to go. The thing I like about it is that it just takes 15 minutes to caramelise the onions if you are in a hurry and do not have enough time to make toppings for your pizza.
Note: 1) Don't forget to add salt to draw the moisture out before caramelsing them.
2) 1)Add water to your onions just when they start turning brown to settle the remained bits which contain most of the flavour.
